It is one of the most significant literary works in American literature history. Its author Louisa May Alcott was born in 1832 in Germantown, Pennsylvania. Her father was a philosopher and a transcendentalist, and her mother was a cultivated woman. Louisa May Alcott's life is very simple. She was born and grew up in Germantown, Pennsylvania. She studied at a school founded by her father, and later taught in a school for a while. In 1868, she published her first novel, "Moods", and then began to write full-time. Her most famous work is "Little Women", which was published in 1868 and has been adapted into many movies and stage plays.Title PageThe Cricket in Times SquareByGary D. SchmidtIllustrated byBrian FlocaMillbrook PressNew YorkDedicationFor Erin and Will, two crickets in our own times squarewho make the city singAcknowledgmentsI would like to thank the many people who shared their stories and memories with me while I was writing this book, especially Tom Ascheim and everyone at Nickelodeon, the amazing staff of the New York City Ballet, the workers at the Circle Line and their ships, the officers of the New York Police Department's First Precinct, and the denizens of the many New York City subway stations—from Times Square to Grand Central Station to the South Ferry loop. I am also grateful to the New York City Public Library system and all the librarians who have shared their love of reading with me over the years.IntroductionIn the beginning, there was a cricket. No, that's not quite right. In the beginning, there was a boy named Tucker. And this is his story. It is a story about a boy and a cricket and the time they both spent in the biggest city in America—a city that is a place where anything can happen, where even a boy and a cricket can find adventure and meaning. It is a story about home, family, love, loss, and the unexpected places we find hope. And it is a story about New York—a place that is at once familiar and mysterious, overpowering and intimate—a place that can never really be seen in its entirety, but only experienced through the stories we tell about it. This is one such story, and these are the words and pictures that go with it. Welcome to The Cricket in Times Square.
