She quickly learns that Lowood is a school where the students are starved and beaten. Jane's character and strength are tested when she must endure these hardships. She soon rises to the ranks of the schoolmistress, teaching the other students and helping them when they are sick or being bullied.When Jane is fifteen years old, she meets the school's benefactor, Mr. Brocklehurst, who tries to force Jane to accept his view of God and marriage. She resists and soon learns that Lowood School was actually run on Mr. Brocklehurst's orders, as punishment for the original sin committed by his own mother. Mr. Brocklehurst's mother had been unfaithful to her husband and Mr. Brocklehurst was the result of that sin. Mr. Brocklehurst tries to humiliate Jane and remove her from Lowood School. She leaves the school as a teacher at Lowood Endowed Orphanage in Essex run by a man named St. John who hates Jane for her spirit and Christianity. However, St. John soon becomes interested in Jane's sister, Mary, and they become engaged. St. John's sister, Helen, returns from India and falls ill, later dying in Jane's arms after a religious vision Jane has, urging her to find St. John for a discussion on God's place in her life. St. John's family plot to send Jane away and break up his marriage with Mary is successful and Mary marries another man who is not right for her after Jane leaves St. John for her true love Rochester and heads for Thornfield Hall in search of employment. She is sent to work as a governess at Thornfield Hall under the watchful eye of Mr. Mason, a young clergyman who soon becomes smitten with Jane but who Jane finds immoral for his dealings with Mason's sister, Blanche Ingram, who Mason had been engaged to before he met Jane but who Blanche had jilted him for another man who she later marries for money as he is richer than Mason had been.
