Part 1: The Land of the Dead1.1: The DescentThe first thing that one noticed upon entering the Land of the Dead was the silence. The world of the living was a cacophony of noise and activity, but here, there was only stillness and peace. The second thing that one noticed was the darkness. Life may have been full of light and color, but death was a void of impenetrable blackness. The journey to the Land of the Dead began with a descent into the earth. Typically, this was accomplished by means of a large and elaborately carved staircase that led down into the ground. At the foot of these stairs was a yawning chasm, the entrance to the underworld.1.2: The CrossingTo cross the chasm and enter the Land of the Dead, the dead were required to traverse a bridge made of a single stone arch. This bridge was narrow and treacherous, and those who fell from it were lost forever in the yawning void.Once across the bridge, one entered a realm of perpetual twilight. The sun and moon were both absent from this place, and only the stars provided any semblance of light.1.3: The City of the DeadThe city of the dead was an odd sight. Its buildings were made of bones and its streets were paved with skulls. But despite its macabre appearance, the city had an odd sort of beauty. The stillness and peace that pervaded the land was palpable here, and all who dwelled here felt a sense of finality and completion.Part 2: The Land of the Living2.1: The AscentThe journey back to the land of the living began with an ascent out of the underworld. This was no easy task, as the stairs were steep and slick, and those who fell from them were doomed to remain in the Land of the Dead forever. At the top of the stairs was a small clearing, a place where those who had journeyed to the underworld could catch their breath and prepare to return to the world above.2.2: The ReturnThe return journey was both tiring and exhilarating. Exhaustion and weakness were common symptoms of those who had journeyed to the underworld, but there was also a sense of achievement and even pride in having made the arduous trip.Back in the world above, one found oneself in a familiar place - often, it was the place where one had died - but now everything had a different meaning and perspective. The living could finally appreciate their lives in a way they had not been able to while they were still alive.
