This temple, with a history spanning over many centuries, occupies an area of 173,982 square meters. It has served as a place for feudal emperors to sacrifice the deity of the Northern Mountain, Mount Heng, from the Han Dynasty to the 17th year of the Shunzhi Emperor's reign in the Qing Dynasty (1660).The architectural layout of the Beiyue Temple follows the traditional Chinese style, with the main buildings arranged along a north-South axis and symmetrical wings on both sides. The main buildings, from south to north, include the Yuxiang Pavilion, Lingxiao Gate, Sanshan Gate, Feitai Hall ruins, and the De'ning Palace. Among them, the De'ning Palace is the main structure within the temple and is also the largest surviving wooden structure from the Yuan Dynasty in China. It covers an area of 2,009.8 square meters and stands 25 meters tall, with nine bays to the front and six bays to the depth.Apart from the architecture, the murals and stone tablets within the temple are also significant artistic treasures. The De'ning Palace is adorned with large-scale color murals painted by Wu Daozi, the renowned painter of the Tang Dynasty. These murals, titled "Yunxingyushi" and "Wanguo Xianing" respectively, are painted on the east and west walls as well as the northern wall.
