IntroductionBreast cancer is a common type of cancer that develops in the cells of the breasts, usually in the tissues that line the inside of the milk ducts or the lobules that supply these ducts with milk. It is a global health concern, affecting women across all age groups and ethnic backgrounds, although the risk increases with age.Types of Breast CancerInvasive Ductal CarcinomaThe most common type of breast cancer, accounting for about 80% of all cases. It starts in the milk ducts and can spread to other parts of the body.Invasive Lobular CarcinomaThis type starts in the milk-producing glands (lobules) and can also spread to other parts of the body.Ductal Carcinoma In Situ (DCIS)This is a non-invasive cancer that starts in the milk ducts but has not yet spread to other parts of the breast or the body.Lobular Carcinoma In Situ (LCIS)Similar to DCIS, but it starts in the milk-producing glands and is also non-invasive.SymptomsCommon symptoms of breast cancer include:A lump or thickening in the breast or under the armSkin changes like dimplingredness, scaling, or puckeringnipple discharge that is not breast milkA change in the size or shape of the breastPain in the breast or nipple that doesn't go awayRisk FactorsBeing a womanGetting olderHaving a family history of breast cancerHaving dense breastsHaving certain genetic mutations like BRCA1 or BRCA2Having had radiation to the chest area as a child or young adultNever having given birth or giving birth at an older ageStarting menopause at a later ageTaking hormone therapy for menopauseUsing certain medications like tamoxifenDrinking alcoholBeing overweight or obese after menopauseDiagnosisDiagnosis of breast cancer usually involves a physical examination, mammography (breast X-ray), and possibly an ultrasound or MRI scan.
